  3. Hiatt's rubbery soul singing, in turn, made each ballad ("Icy Blue Heart," "Is Anybody There?") tug at every available heartstring. The album became a bit of a hit factory for others, too--with Emmylou Harris, Suzy Bogguss, and Aaron Neville among the many who made Slow Turning's songs their own. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD/5().
  4. After the success of Bring the Family, John Hiatt originally intended to reunite that album's all-star backing band (Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, and Jim Keltner) for a follow-up. Hiatt's "dream band" proved to be unavailable, and he ended up cutting Slow Turning with his road band, the Goners, but the finished product proves he remembered well the lessons learned from Bring the Family.

  8. "Icy Blue Heart" is a great tearjerker of a slow country tune that is on the level of the great "Lipstick Sunset" from the aforementioned Bring the Family. Finally, the gospel tinged "Is Anybody There?" is one of his most underrated songs. Slow Turning is classic Hiatt and a great introduction to his music.
